Where should HVAC UV light be installed near the evaporator coil?

HVAC UV light should be installed so the UV‑C lamp has a clear, direct line of sight to the evaporator coil and drain pan inside the air handler. The purpose is to keep the always‑damp coil surfaces from growing mold or biofilm that restrict airflow and reduce efficiency. For most systems, the lamp mounts in the coil compartment or just downstream of the coil in the supply plenum so the light washes the coil face without shining into occupied spaces. In our Superior‑area work, good placement also avoids direct exposure to plastic wiring jackets and allows easy lamp service.

  • Look for: line‑of‑sight to coil, minimal shadowing from brackets, and a tight, sealed lamp port.
  • Add a service switch or interlock so the lamp shuts off when the panel opens.
  • Replace the bulb per manufacturer guidance and verify materials are UV‑rated.

Have a licensed HVAC technician place and aim the lamp, then test for light leakage before powering on.
